What is MILK?
In this case, MILK is an acronym for Musical Instrument Learning for Kids. While our name isn’t grammatically correct, we wanted a catchy pseudo-cool acronym for a very important community focused organization whose goal is to enrich kids’ lives by providing musical scholarships for musical instruction in their neighborhoods. We are a New York State registered not-for-profit corporation, in the process of filing for Federal tax-exempt status with the US Internal Revenue Service under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code.
Musical programs in our inner-city public schools have been the victim to draconian budgetary cuts. And while we can’t single-handily fix this problem, we can however help some underprivileged kids by providing access to musical instrument (and voice) instruction through 100% fully funded one year, musical instruction scholarships to select kids who by way of competition demonstrate passion for music and whose parents or legal guardians can demonstrate financial need.
Our Story
In 2016 our co-founder’s then elementary school aged daughter challenged him to prove to her why it was very important for her to learn to play a musical instrument. George accepted the challenge and while doing research, he came across the following video based on Dr. Anita Collin’s work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R0JKCYZ8hng . The next day George met with co-founder Raquel, and they concluded that they needed to bring musical instrument instruction to inner-city children. Within three weeks of the initial meeting MILK was born!
